Reasons you should load up on calcium!

Calcium is critical!

The awareness of the importance of dietary calcium has increased because research has established that in addition to maintaining and obtaining healthy bones and teeth, calcium is important for the regulation of cell function, protecting cells from free radical damage, nerve transmission, blood clotting, and controlling muscle contraction and relaxation.

On top of that, calcium provides a protective role against osteoporosis, hypertension (high blood pressure), pregnancy-induced hypertension, hypercholesterolemia (high blood cholesterol), certain cancers (colon and mammary) and possibly the prevention of gallstones1. A major study also showed that it can reduce premenstrual symptoms2.

Calcium is important to both men and women!

Osteoporosis, or porous bone, is a disease characterised by low bone mass and structural deterioration of bone tissue. This leads to bone fragility and an increased susceptibility to fractures of the hip, spine, and wrist. Inadequate calcium intake is a contributing factor in the development of osteoporosis.

Unfortunately, a calcium deficiency usually goes undetected until you experience loose teeth, receding gums, or a bone fracture. There is no known cure for osteoporosis, and it seems to be affecting people at younger ages more and more. Hence, it is important to ensure you have enough calcium to prevent the preventable!

Calcium recommendations

The National Academy of Sciences and the National Osteoporosis Foundation (US) recommend daily calcium intakes of 1,000 – 1,200mg/day for adult men and women.

Facts on Calcium Absorption

With poor diets and lack of exercise, calcium supplementation is a must for most people. However, studies have concluded that in order for your body to utilise bio-available calcium in the bloodstream and build strong bones, trace minerals like magnesium, potassium, zinc, copper and phosphate need to be present. These trace minerals are essential to fully maintain optimal bone health. A recent study has showed that bone loss in postmenopausal women could be only partly arrested by calcium supplementation, but to fully maintain bone mass, trace minerals were required3.

Nutritionists agree that food is the best source of calcium. However, most people do not have enough calcium in their diets. Even if they do, calcium is not easily absorbed as no more than 10-20% of what is found in foods is actually absorbed and metabolized.

Meals high in fat decreases absorption of calcium. The release of calcium in certain vegetables can be inhibited by oxalates that are found naturally in foods such as kale, spinach, broccoli, grains and cereals. Vitamin D must be present in the body in order for absorption to occur. Lactose and vitamin C increase calcium absorption. Calcium requires an acidic environment for absorption, which is a huge problem for older people or those on acid-reducing medicines who have less production of digestive acids.

Most of the other calcium supplements are made from sea shells, rocks, stones and animal bones. These are not natural foods and not what nature intended for natural calcium absorption. They could also be contaminated with heavy metals, i.e., naturally occurring heavy metals found in oyster bed environment.

Organic milk calcium supplement, on the other hand, is a milk mineral complex made from milk of ORGANIC source. Milk is a natural food that has been trusted for centuries to be safe. Organic milk calcium supplement is free of hormones, steroids and antibiotics. It has been tested in Singapore to be free of toxic metals such as lead, mercury, arsenic and copper. It contains no fat and is safe for consumption even by children and expecting mothers.

Organic milk calcium supplement’s mineral ratio is amazingly close to the mineral composition of human bone.  If you look at the percentage of the mineral constituent of bone and the percentage of the mineral constituent in organic milk calcium supplement, you will find them very similar.  This means that you are receiving the same amount of the minerals your body requires to achieve optimal bone health.

It does not have problem with absorption unlike calcium sources that requires an acid environment for absorption.  Hence, older people or those on acid-reducing medicines can still enjoy optimal absorption of calcium from organic milk calcium supplement.

Calcium is best absorbed by the body in small amounts.  Therefore, a supplement with a low recommended dosage, taken several times a day, is ideal. Each tablet of organic milk calcium supplement contains 250mg of elemental calcium, so consumers can choose to take low doses of calcium throughout the day for better absorption.
